I love this too. We called the sponge roll a Swiss roll and my mother rolled it exactly as you described. I too, have her recipe file in her handwriting and several years ago I scanned some of the recipes and made a digital album each for my children. 🥰

A great gift idea is taking an image of the handwritten recipes and have them put on kitchen dish towels. My mother embroidered on one side of the towel and used a different recipe on the other side of the towel; she gave out to family and we all have different ones.
