One military observer was left in Srinagar each winter while the UNMOGIP (United Nations Military Observer Group India Pakistan) HQ moved to Rawalpindi. This was our fate as the cold winds blew in off the mountains.

The kangri is fascinating. I can see how the locals would find it a must in cold weather. I can't help wondering about the danger of setting oneself on fire if you tried it without local knowledge of how to do it properly ... The phrase "Don't try this at home" crossed my mind.
