In Mediterranean countries they used to heat up stones in the fire and put them under the table to keep the family warm during meals.

I understand that this was not the only danger but there were possibly long term health implications too from the fumes emitted.
Of course, I hadn't thought of that. Not something I will be trying anytime soon regardless of how cold it gets!
